Malcolm Shiels
Associate Director, based in Newcastle

I joined Summers-Inman in 2007. I was about 10 years into my career as a specialist construction health and safety risk management professional and had worked in both the public and private sectors nationwide.

I wanted to head up a specialist CDM / Health and Safety consultancy team, and Summers-Inman happened to be looking for someone to head up just such a team.

Having worked in the construction industry for many years I knew enough about the status and calibre of Summers-Inman to know that I would find it a stimulating place to further develop my career. I also knew by that stage that I much prefer organisations where individuals can stand and be counted and where passengers are found out at an early stage. I now lead a team of three dedicated construction risk management specialists and we provide a range of services to our clients.

My approach and that of the team who work with me is very much a quality driven service for our clients. We want to walk away from projects leaving the client and the stakeholders involved thinking 'yeh I would use them again'.

I really love my job and enjoy the company of the people I work with, which is important as we spend a lot of our adult lives at work. To be able to have a laugh whilst the serious stuff is done is vital to me.

Outside of work I relax by watching Newcastle United (did I say relax!!) and spending time with my family and especially my grandson. Chilling in the garden is something I enjoy, where im not really doing gardening work, im just chilling with a beer! And I also love going to the cinema, particularly to see epics, thrillers, and action movies.

All in all Summers-Inman is a cool relaxing place to work and I intend to be here for a while yet.
