Summers-Inman is delighted to share news of the remarkable achievements of the BIOS Laboratory and the Net Zero Industry Innovation Centre (NZIIC) at Teesside University, which were both recognised at the prestigious Constructing Excellence Awards 2024 and in which we played key roles.
Given the fierce national competition it was tremendous news when The BIOS Laboratory at Teesside University was announced as winner of the national award for Building Project of the Year – it’s also the first time a Constructing Excellence North East regional winning project has won a national award for Building Project of the Year! BIOS received a further accolade at the national awards ceremony receiving Highly Commended in the Integration & Collaborative Working category.
With an appointment to provide project management and quantity surveying support from RIBA Stage 3 onwards, it was the second project the Summers-Inman team was awarded through the NEUPC framework and one of several major schemes won at Teesside University through different framework routes as part of the university’s ambitious campus masterplan.
This state-of-the-art facility is a testament to the power of collaboration and innovation. The BREEAM Outstanding build was designed and delivered by lead contractor Wates and architect Faulkner Brown with desco (Mechanical and Electrical Services), Curtains (Transport, Civil and Structural), One Environments (Landscaping) and Mariner (BREEAM and Net Zero consultants).
The project exemplifies excellence not only in design and execution but also in fostering strong partnerships. Reflecting on the achievement, the team stated:
“Working together with businesses and social enterprises across the Tees Valley area, we fully believe our work at BIOS has left a lasting legacy at Teesside University – a goal we strive to achieve at every site.”
The NZIIC project at Teesside University was awarded Highly Commended in the Climate Action category. This cutting-edge facility underlines the region’s commitment to sustainability and innovation, helping lead the charge towards a greener future.
Summers-Inman won the project following another competitive tender submission via the NEUPC consultants’ framework, our successful track record on earlier projects putting us in a strong position to secure this appointment.
The new NZIIC is part of the latest development at the expanding Net Zero Innovation Hub, spearheaded by Teesside University, which is based on the Tees Advanced Manufacturing Park (TeesAMP) in Middlesbrough.
The project not only places the region at the forefront of the clean energy agenda but sees it well placed for the knock-on benefits of a strong hydrogen economy, which could add up to £7billion to the region’s economy from now until 2050, creating thousands of jobs in the process.
The project was brought to life by an exceptional team of which Summers-Inman was delighted to be part and which also included GSSArchitecture, Teesside University, Robertson Group, BGP and Cundall. Collectively we have set a benchmark for sustainable development in the North East. The building itself will drive society’s shift to a low carbon economy creating a cumulative effect for the Tees Valley. The building practices it promotes will allow specialist research into decarbonisation, smart energy, circular economy and research and innovation that will bring academia and industry together under one roof.
These awards highlight the strength of the construction industry in the North East, showcasing the exceptional talent and collaborative spirit driving progress in the region.
Summers-Inman extends heartfelt congratulations to all the winners and teams involved. Their dedication and innovation continue to push the boundaries of what is possible in the built environment.
