Social Value & Summers-Inman

Because operating in a more socially valuable way is just the right thing to do.

Summers-Inman is committed to the delivery of social value within the communities we work.

As a national business with eight offices across the UK, our reach is extensive. We pride ourselves on the integration of social value principles throughout all our projects, to increase equality, improve wellbeing, and increase sustainability.

Whilst often interconnecting, our social values are delivered intrinsically as part of our business ethos and can be divided into the following areas:

Supporting Thriving Communities

Working with the communities in which we operate and deliver services is very important to us. It enables us to give something back for the benefit of the wider community.

We provide opportunity for growth for local organisations, creating supply chain opportunities to SMEs and local businesses. This includes ensuring contractors and suppliers promote jobs and training for local people, with monitoring of specific project KPI’s.

We work with the charity Together for Short Lives where we have developed a national partnership, supporting children’s hospices.

Staff across the UK are encouraged to volunteer for causes, including the Big Sleep Out, Macmillan Coffees Mornings Macmillan coffee morning image, and Local Foodbank appeals.

We also provide support for youth activities, including sponsorship of grassroots football, such as the Thurlaston Juniors Under 11 football team.

Thurlaston Juniors (under 10’s). The team are based locally to our Leicester office and approached us in 2018 to help them provide new kit and training wear for the children in the team.

Enabling an Inclusive Economy

Our most valuable assets are the great people who work for us, and we are committed to providing a vibrant, modern, and inclusive environment in which to work.

We attach considerable importance to training and development.

A current example of our approach and how this can influence career progression and outcomes for young people is, as a business, we provide day release opportunities, apprenticeships, year out placements and work experience.

We also offer careers and training advice for unemployed persons, to support their access to work in the community, as well as the opportunity to attend Summers-Inman training sessions for individuals, residents and external stakeholders interested in a career in construction.

We also provide Health & Safety workshops for business start-ups.

Summers-Inman believe fully in a healthy work/life balance and invest continually in our people so that they have the confidence and skills to be the best that they can be.

Working together towards Net Zero

We recognise that all activities have an influence on the environment, and we take our responsibility in this respect very seriously. As can be seen by our accreditations, we seek to continually improve on any environmental impact we may have and engage with our people daily to learn and understand how we can better provide our services whilst lessening any effect on the environment.

Our environmental management system is BSI ISO 14001 accredited, with regular internal and external audits to ensure we remain compliant.

Summers-Inman are committed to improving our environmental performance not only in how we manage our business and deliver our services but also in the advice we provide to our clients and the influence we have over the projects we are involved.

We have invested in our in-house technical expertise and have expanded our offering to include BREEAM and sustainability services. We have in-house BREEAM Advisory Professionals (AP’s) and certified BREEAM Assessors.

We are aware of our environmental responsibilities and social obligations, and we can make a positive contribution to carbon management and significantly reducing carbon emissions ensuring we do our utmost to assist our clients in achieving Net Zero Carbon by 2030.

As a construction consultancy there is not a lot of room for movement, but we are determined to do all we can to contribute towards carbon improvements in the industry.
