Project Outline: The construction of a new £72m student village to create 1,277 student bedrooms across a series of six blocks adjacent to the main university campus on the site of the iconic Richardson Road flats, The redevelopment also included the construction of a £1.3m energy centre to service the buildings, as well as landscaping and supporting infrastructure works.
Services: Lead Consultant, Project Management, Contract Administration, Cost Management, Principal Designer.
Roles and Achievements: We encouraged off-site pre-fabrication for the project. In addition to a shorter construction programme, modular construction provided other significant benefits. This included reduced cost, less waste and consistent quality. In addition, off-site construction required fewer on-site workers, reducing the risk of health & safety incidents.
We worked closely with Newcastle University, the designers and other consultants to improve the project’s environmental performance and promote sustainable development. We incorporated an energy efficient system and have since reached an EPC Design Rating of A for all accommodation blocks – the best rating possible.
