BIOS Laboratory & Life Sciences Building, Middlesbrough

Client: Teesside University

Location: Middlesbrough

Value: £35m

Project Outline: The BIOS Laboratory & Life Sciences Building is a new build laboratory teaching facility. The building is designed to house a range of simulated clinical settings and flexible virtual simulation spaces that can replicate various environments. It will include specialist laboratories for teaching scientific disciplines such as chemistry, microbiology, and food sciences. Additionally, there will be general-purpose teaching and learning spaces that can accommodate classroom-based teaching of various subjects. The ground floor will feature a reception area and management facilities, while externally, there will be a paved courtyard with soft landscaping.

The design prioritizes sustainability, aiming for a BREEAM Outstanding rating and a Net Zero energy consumption. Renewable energy systems, such as PV panels, will be incorporated, along with low-carbon building materials and energy-efficient equipment. The building’s interior will feature teaching facilities, research laboratories, a clinical skills suite with digitally enabled simulator spaces, seminar rooms, workspace, and support facilities. The Earth Sciences and Food Sciences faculty will also be housed in the building.

Services: Project Management and Quantity Surveying

Roles and Achievements: Summers-Inman provided Project Management and Cost Consultancy services from the project’s inception to completion. The construction site’s location within Teesside University’s Middlesbrough Campus presented challenges. Underground services within and around the building footprint required diversion as part of the enabling works. Careful pedestrian management and segregation were also essential due to the building’s position along a busy north-south route through the campus.
