Volac Biomass CHP Plant, Felinfach

Project Outline: New build 20 MW biomass CHP plant installation generating electricity and steam for adjacent Volac production facility. Boiler house building with ORC generator area and attached 3 storey control building, detached fuel store building, chipper building and external log storage yard areas.

Project involved ecological site preparation works including removal of invasive plant species and relocation of bats under bat licence. Site remediation works to treat and/or remove fuel oil contaminated ground and also to remove some areas of buried asbestos containing materials. Existing on site aquifer water boreholes remained operational throughout the works.

Some vibro-replacement ground improvement works were undertaken beneath new build structures together with new driven concrete piled foundations.

Services: Civils Project Manager, Cost Manager, CDM Principal Contractor, CDM H&S Services. Work packages procured on a construction management basis.

Roles and Achievements:
Works undertaken as a fast track project to meet challenging programme deadlines. The project was delivered by working closely with the European biomass plant contractor. Works undertaken adjacent to two operational food factory sites with shared access and some shared services infrastructure.
